Even though the Cataloochee Valley is only 10 miles from I-40, 39 miles from Cherokee North Carolina and 65 miles from Gatlinburg Tennessee, it feels far more remote due to the condition of the roads to get into the Cataloochee Valley.
There are 2 ways to get into Cataloochee, the hard way and the very hard way. If you have a large vehicle or are towing a trailer we suggest you only take the hard way through Cove Creek Road into the Cataloochee Entrance Road.
The very hard way includes taking Old State Road 284 which was the Old Turnpike used during the Civil War. You can came from US321 to Cosby via a paved road and just before Big Creek NC, the road becomes steep, winding with blind curves, rocky and in winter even more treacherous.
